Airport History

Only a few homesteads existed in the immediate area when the Canadian government made plans for an airbase near Long Beach during World War II. It was the threat of attack that prompted the construction of the military airport, for which land clearing began in 1941. A full squadron was stationed in Tofino, and the base was functional until the 1950s. Prior to the construction of the airbase, access to the west coast was limited to boat traffic. Highway 4 to Port Alberni was opened in 1959.

Owned and operated by the Alberni Valley Regional District, operations at YAZ are funded through taxation with contributions from Tofino, Ucluelet and the Long Beach Electoral Area. Income is also generated through land leases and landing fees. As the airport’s owners, the ACRD is undertaking a land-use plan in order to fund infrastructure upgrades at Tofino-Long Beach Airport, recognizing the importance of the area for tourism. The ACRD estimates 20,000 passengers use the Tofino-Long Beach Airport on a yearly basis.
